Team Backpack! August 3, 2017

Batavia High School Marching Band students and CHIP IN teamed up once again for the fourth-annual backpack stuffing night to help BPS101 families in need. Marching Band members helped stuff over 100 bags* with school supplies! When students come to pick up their bags, they can choose a new backpack of their choice!  Thank you to this wonderful group of students and to Mary Carr, the parent who coordinated their help, provided snacks and organized a donation drive with the band. The students even added a special hand-written card to each child, welcoming them back to a great new school year!  CHIP IN also purchased 40 pre-made boxes of school supplies for RMS and BHS students from EPI, who can also select a backpack of their choice.  Thank you so much to the  community groups and members who donated school supplies as well as local churches, including:

Introducing the Shutkina Family

CHIP IN Batavia would like to introduce you to a family we have been helping.   We are looking for donations of gift cards for gas, Aldi, Target or Walmart or monetary donations.  Since posting on facebook, we have collected  $4,969 for them!
The Shutkina’s are a Russian family that immigrated to the U.S. in 2015 for a better life, the father being a skilled carpenter.  With their 10 children, they moved to Batavia in the summer of 2016.  In October the father left for work one morning and got on a plane to Russia leaving the family.   This has been devastating and overwhelming to the mother, Lyubov,  left on her own to raise this large family in a foreign country with no income and not knowing the language.

The children have thrived in school.  They've been  blessed by Sofyia, a volunteer from the Russian community. who  has spent countless hours helping them. CHIP IN  found 3 wonderful volunteers to help teach English to Lyubov.

CHIP IN and volunteers have helped/paid/donated  rent, soccer fees, quarry passes, home repairs, English lessons,  Christ Community Church camp, Funway passes,  bikes/helmets/locks/bells, clothes, towels, toys, shoes, bathing suits, gift cards, and summer camps/programs.

St. Vincent DePaul, First Baptist Church Geneva, Batavia United Way, Salvation Army, CHIP IN, and the Batavia and Elgin food pantries have all provided support to the family.

Our hope is that Lyubov  becomes self-supporting.  She was a trained nurse in Russia. Her goal is to take the classes she needs to complete her nursing certification in the US.  This is probably a 2 year project.  The two oldest children, ages 16 and 14, had summer jobs at Pal Joeys.

If you want to donate, checks can be made to BFEE (Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence)- every penny goes to the Shutkina family.  In the memo line of the check, mark: Shutkina family.  Or, use Paypal on our website,  We have a separate Paypal section for donations to the Shutkina family on the “How Can I CHIP IN” page.

Gift cards and checks can be mailed to: Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence, PO Box 1003, Batavia, IL  60510,
or drop off at the front desk at the Rosalie Jones Administration Office, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia IL  60510   (mark envelope: CHIP IN Batavia/Shutkina Family).    Open M-F 8-4:30

A Heartwarming Story

2 adorable girls- Madeline and Hannah Fox, came to Central Office with 2 envelopes filled with cash and checks for CHIP IN, with donations totally over $800! Here is their story from their awesome mom, Amy, who is teaching her kids very loving and valuable life lessons:

Madeline's birthday was January 15 and Hannah's was January 19. With their birthdays so close to Christmas, I have always struggled with what do they really NEED for their birthdays after receiving so much during the holidays. That's when I decided to suggest something. My sister, their aunt, has Type 1 Diabetes. She was diagnosed 5 years ago and JDRF has become an organization that my family has really supported. Last year I made the suggestion that instead of receiving gifts, they ask their family and friends to donate to JDRF in honor of their aunt. They loved the idea! We also made it a surprise to their aunt. So last year, many of their friends and family helped support their cause for their aunt. After that the girls decided on their own that they wanted to do that again but pick another charity. Hannah thought of Chip In Batavia because at Grace McWayne, she has learned about this organization and donated items before.  We are so happy that you will be able to help families in our community.
My motivation came from trying to teach the girls a few things - 1. That it really is better to give than receive. 2. It's important to think of others and help people if and when you can.
THANK YOU AMY, MADELINE AND HANNAH!!!!! You are truly making a difference to so many!

Another fun and successful prom dress giveaway!!! We gave away over 125 dresses...short and long, straight and poufy, all colors, styles and sizes....thanks to all the volunteers for making it a fun and special day for so many girls and their families. Here are some photos of the set up at the library...with 5 private changing areas and LOTS of dresses!!! We brought about 2 dozen dresses to the Clothes Closet; BHS took 6 for Madrigals; RMS took 22 for the 8th grade dinner dance. Thank you to everyone that donated dresses or donated money to help pay for boys tuxes and prom tickets. We did not take any photos of the girls for privacy issues...but do have 1 for an adorable little girl who got a dress to play dress-up in, and a very happy girl who sent us some photos.
Thank you to the Batavia Public Library for all your help and support...a pleasure and honor working with you.
We will be back next year at the Library!

Thank you BHS Cheer Team and Alyssa and Deanna Vanderheyden for organizing this:

At the end-of-season banquet for the Batavia High School Cheer Team, team members brought basketfuls of donations for CHIP IN's Welcome Baskets and the Fox Valley Christian Church's  Friday Food Backpacks for BPS101 students. "Team members brought all items to their banquet and, within five minutes, carried everything out to load up two cars for delivery!. Pretty great group of student athletes!
